Hampshire County takes in Northampton, Amherst, Easthampton and 17 other towns in the middle of the Pioneer Valley. All 20 are inland, with none on the CZM coastal list (CZM).
Its housing spreads across every era. In the American Community Survey (2020-2024), 27% of units predate 1940, 38% are from 1940 to 1979 and 14% from 2000 or later, for a median year built of 1969 (ACS B25034). Detached houses are 59% of units; two- to four-unit buildings and buildings of five or more are 17% and 16%. About 68% of homes are owner-occupied (ACS B25024, B25003).
Four Hampshire municipalities have local historic district areas in the Massachusetts Historical Commission inventory, six areas in total, among them the Dickinson district in Amherst (2012), North Prospect-Lincoln-Sunset in Amherst (2017), Belchertown Center (1990), the Granby Historic District (1979) and Elm Street in Northampton (2013). The county also has 56 National Register district areas (MHC inventory). In a local district, a garage door visible from a public way can't change without a certificate from the commission (MGL c.40C §5 and §6). Check with the commission before replacing a door.
With a mix that runs from 19th-century village houses to new subdivisions, there's no typical Hampshire garage. Detached carriage barns and old outbuildings may need a custom-sized door or a carriage-house style; a 1970s ranch needs a standard insulated sectional; a new house needs its builder door maintained.
