Millis is a small town, with 3,471 housing units. Nearly half (48%) were built from 1940 to 1979, and the median year built is 1974 (ACS B25034). Detached homes are 68% of units; 10% are attached one-unit homes and 14% are in two- to four-unit buildings (ACS B25024). Eighty-three percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied.
That 1940-1979 majority means many Millis garages were built with the house as a single attached bay or a modest two-car garage. Doors on those garages have usually been replaced once already, often with an older uninsulated steel door. The usual call is a snapped torsion spring or a door that shudders because its rollers and hinges are worn out. A tune-up with new rollers fixes most noise. If the door is dented or drafty, an insulated door helps an attached garage stay warmer. With so many owner-occupied homes, owners usually decide quickly and can choose a door style themselves.
The MHC inventory lists the Millis Center Historic District (2007) on the National Register. The layer shows no local historic district in Millis, so no c.40C commission review shows up in the inventory.
The state's home-improvement chart lists garage door replacement as a "maybe" for a building permit and new door installation as a "yes" (mass.gov). Check with the Millis building office on your specific job.
In a one-car attached garage, the door is often the main way in and out of the house. That makes a quiet, reliable opener and a keypad worth more than they would be on a garage you rarely use. A keypad also helps when a family member forgets a remote. If the garage shares a wall with a kitchen or family room, the door's insulation and bottom seal affect that room's comfort too.
Licensed and insured. Doors from Clopay, Garaga, Wayne Dalton and Amarr; openers of all brands, including LiftMaster, Chamberlain and Genie.
