Berkshire County

Becket is a Berkshire hill town where many homes are second homes. About 46% of units are seasonal (ACS B25004). Ninety-nine percent of units are single-family detached (ACS B25024), and 98% of occupied homes are owner-occupied. Thirteen percent of units were built before 1940, 45% from 1940 to 1979 and 18% in 2000 or later; the median year is 1977 (ACS B25034).
The state inventory lists five National Register entries for Becket: the Middlefield-Becket Stone Arch Railroad Bridge District (1980), the Becket Center Historic District (1982), the North Becket Village Historic District (1988), the Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival (2003) and the Western Railroad Stone Arch Bridges and Chester Factory Village Depot (2021) (MHC inventory). No local historic district is listed.
With close to half the housing seasonal, many garages go weeks or months without use. What fails after a long idle period:
Have the door checked at the start of the season. A smart opener shows whether the door is closed when you're away.
Houses from 1940 to 1979 are 45% of the stock. Many began as cottages with small detached garages. A light, non-insulated steel door suits an unheated garage. Check the headroom before ordering if the roof is low.
Heavy snow and cold are hard on doors. Clear snow away from the bottom of the door before opening.
The state's home improvement chart says a garage door replacement may need a permit and a new installation does (mass.gov). We confirm with the town.
If you rent a seasonal house, a keypad code per guest is easier to manage than handing over remotes. Change the code after each stay. Many newer openers also let you share access through an app.
We install Clopay, Garaga, Wayne Dalton and Amarr doors and service LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie and other openers.
