Hardwick's housing is old and varied. Forty-two percent of units were built before 1940, 17% from 1940 to 1979 and 18% in 2000 or later; the median year is 1968 (ACS B25034). Detached houses are 65% of units and two- to four-unit buildings 26%, with buildings of five or more at 6% (ACS B25024). Sixty-eight percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied.
The state inventory lists the Hardwick Village Historic District and the Gilbertville Historic District, both from 1991, on the National Register (MHC inventory). It shows no local historic district, so Register listing alone doesn't require a review of a new garage door. If you'd like a door that suits an older house, carriage-style panels and a darker color are a simple choice.
With about a quarter of units in two- to four-unit buildings, many garages are shared between apartments or sit as a row of bays behind the house. Each bay may have a different age of door, opener and spring. We can service one bay or bring them all to the same standard, and match the door style across the row.
Older lots often have a barn or shed that holds a car. Their doors may be sliders on an exterior rail, or hinged doors that sag. If you want an overhead door, the opening often needs a new header and jambs first. We look at the framing before quoting the door.
Close to a fifth of the housing dates from 2000 or later. These usually have attached garages with insulated doors and ceiling-mounted openers. Their springs and rollers wear on a predictable schedule; a tune-up every year or two keeps them running quietly.
Cold thickens old grease, so a door can slow down or stop partway. Clean the tracks rather than greasing them, and use a light lubricant on rollers and hinges.
The state's home improvement chart says a garage door replacement may need a permit and a new installation does (mass.gov). We confirm with the Hardwick building office.
We install Clopay, Garaga, Wayne Dalton and Amarr doors and service LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie and other openers.
