Burlington grew fast after the war and it shows in the housing. More than half of all units (56%) were built from 1940 to 1979, 24% in 2000 or later and only 6% before 1940; the median unit dates to 1972 (ACS B25034). Detached houses are 71% of units and buildings of five or more 22% (ACS B25024). Seventy-four percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied.
Most single-family streets in Burlington were laid out in the 1950s and 1960s, with ranches and split-levels on similar lots. Their garages tend to be one- or two-car, attached, with doors that have been replaced once since the house was built. When the springs on those doors break, the problem is often the original spring size: a newer, heavier insulated door on an old set of springs wears them out early. We weigh the door and size the torsion springs to fit.
Split-level and raised-ranch garages sit below bedrooms or family rooms. An insulated door and a quiet belt or wall-mount opener make a difference in the room above.
About a fifth of Burlington's units are in larger complexes, where associations often control the door style. The homes built since 2000 tend to have two-car doors on torsion springs and openers with Wi-Fi that may need a firmware update or new safety sensors.
The building department reviews permit applications, does inspections and enforces the State Building Code. Residents can apply for a building permit online, and the office is open on Wednesdays until 7 pm (Burlington Building Department). On the state's chart, door replacement is a "maybe" for a permit and new installation a "yes" (mass.gov).
On a busy family driveway, safety sensors get kicked out of line by bikes and bins. If the door reverses or stops halfway and the opener lights blink, check that both sensor lights are steady before you call.
We install Clopay, Garaga, Wayne Dalton and Amarr doors and repair LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie and other openers.
