"Smart" covers two different things. One is an opener with Wi-Fi built in, such as LiftMaster Premium models with myQ control or Chamberlain chain and belt models with built-in Wi-Fi. (source: LiftMaster) (source: Chamberlain) The other is an add-on controller that gives an opener you already own app control. Which one makes sense depends mostly on how old your opener is and how it senses obstacles.
Chamberlain's myQ Smart Garage Control (MYQ-G0401) is a good example of the requirements. (source: Chamberlain)
Genie's equivalent is a Wi-Fi retrofit kit that works with the Aladdin Connect app. Up to two more door position sensors can be added so one kit monitors and controls up to three openers. (source: Genie)
If your opener's safety sensors don't work, fix that first: an add-on controller relies on them. See safety sensors.
Genie says Aladdin Connect has no subscription fee for its smart features, lets you create virtual keys for scheduled or recurring access, and can close the door at a set time or after it has been left open. (source: Genie) LiftMaster's Premium openers pair myQ control with battery backup, and some include a built-in camera. (source: LiftMaster) (source: LiftMaster)
An add-on is usually enough when the opener is post-1993, runs smoothly and has working photo eyes. A new opener makes more sense when the old one is near the end of its life anyway, or when you also want battery backup or a camera. We'll tell you which way we'd go after seeing it.
We service and install all opener types and brands; most common are LiftMaster, Chamberlain and Genie, and we can set up the smart controller along with the opener.
