Shutesbury is a wooded town of detached, owner-occupied houses. Detached houses are 90% of units and two- to four-unit buildings 8% (ACS B25024); 91% of occupied homes are owner-occupied. About 9% of units are seasonal (ACS B25004). Forty-four percent of units were built from 1940 to 1979, 9% before 1940 and 16% in 2000 or later; the median year is 1979 (ACS B25034).
About one unit in eleven is seasonal. Cottages often have small detached garages or sheds with swing doors. When a cottage becomes a year-round home, the owners often add an overhead door. That may need a new header if the building wasn't framed for one. We check before quoting.
The median home is from 1979. Garage openings in older houses aren't always standard sizes, so we measure each one and order a door to fit. Older doors are often wood or uninsulated steel. An insulated steel door keeps an attached garage warmer.
Wooded roads lose power in storms. A battery-backup opener lets you get the car out. If yours doesn't have one, learn how to pull the manual release safely with the door closed.
Ice at the threshold freezes the bottom seal to the slab. Free it before you run the opener, or a cable or gear may break.
If you hear a loud bang and the door won't lift, a spring has broken. Leave the door closed and call.
The state's home improvement chart says a garage door replacement may need a permit and a new installation does (mass.gov). We confirm with the town.
Grit carried in on tires wears the bottom seal and collects in the lower track. Sweep the track bottoms each season. If the seal is torn, replace it before rodents or water get in. See weatherstripping.
We install Clopay, Garaga, Wayne Dalton and Amarr doors and service LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie and other openers.
