Abington's median home was built in 1970. Forty-two percent of units date from 1940 to 1979, 21% predate 1940 and 20% were built in 2000 or later (ACS B25034). Detached homes are 63% of units, two- to four-unit buildings 11% and five-plus buildings 18% (ACS B25024). Seventy-three percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied.
Abington's Building Department published a homeowner spotlight saying the department "cannot recommend a contractor or service provider". Instead it suggests interviewing at least three contractors, getting a written, detailed estimate and checking each contractor's license and registration status. We agree with that advice and are glad to be one of the three. Ask us for a written estimate that lists the door, springs, opener and labor; our license and insurance papers are available on request. The same page notes that permits are applied for online through OpenGov. The state chart lists door replacement as a "maybe" for a building permit and new door installation as a "yes" (mass.gov).
Abington's age spread shows up in its garages. Prewar houses often have small detached garages that suit a lightweight carriage-house door. The 1950s-1970s ranches and splits commonly need spring and roller work on aging doors. On newer homes the calls are more often about opener electronics and sensor alignment.
The MHC inventory lists the Island Grove Park National Register District (2002). It shows no local historic district in Abington.
A written estimate should name the door model and size, the spring type, whether the old door is hauled away, the opener model if one is included, and the planned install date. If two estimates differ a lot, the line items usually show why, which makes the town's advice to get three easier to act on.
Doors: Clopay, Garaga, Wayne Dalton and Amarr. Openers: all types, including LiftMaster, Chamberlain and Genie.
