Mendon is almost all single-family houses: 92% of units are detached and none are in buildings of five or more (ACS B25024). Eighty-seven percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied. The median unit dates to 1985. Nine percent of units predate 1940, 27% are from 1940 to 1979 and 18% from 2000 or later (ACS B25034). About 3% of units are seasonal (ACS B25004).
The MHC inventory lists the Mendon Center Local Historic District (2017) and the Washington Street Local Historic District (2024). A district commission's review covers exterior features seen from a public way, doors among them (MGL c.40C §5 and §6). If your house is in either district, ask the historic commission before you replace a garage door that shows from the street. Mendon Center and the North Avenue Rural Historic District are also on the National Register (MHC inventory).
Older Mendon properties often have barns or detached garages with wide openings. We can fit a carriage house door or a plain steel door sized to the opening.
Most of Mendon's houses went up after 1980, often with attached two- or three-car garages. Wide doors use heavy torsion springs, and when one breaks the door is too heavy to lift safely. Leave it closed and call for broken spring repair.
Openers in homes from the 1990s are reaching the end of their service life. Replacements now come with battery backup and app control; a belt-drive opener is the quiet choice under living space.
According to state guidance, replacing a door may require a building permit and installing a new one does (mass.gov). We confirm with Mendon before work.
We install Clopay, Garaga, Wayne Dalton and Amarr doors.
