Two-thirds of Truro's housing units (68%) are seasonal (ACS B25004), and Truro is on the state coastal-communities list (Massachusetts CZM). Detached houses are 90% of units and attached houses 5% (ACS B25024); 84% of occupied homes are owner-occupied. Thirty-six percent of units were built from 1940 to 1979, 14% before 1940 and 19% in 2000 or later; the median year is 1980 (ACS B25034).
The state inventory lists Highland Light Station (1987), the Truro Highlands Historic District (2011) and the First Congregational Parish Historic District (2014) on the National Register (MHC inventory). It shows no local historic district, so Register listing alone doesn't require review of a garage door.
With so many seasonal houses, many garage doors are used heavily for a few months and then not at all. The off months are hard on them. Moisture and salt settle on springs and cables, and the bottom seal can stick to the slab. Have a caretaker or us check the door before you open the house. A smart opener lets you see and close the door from away.
Salt air on the Outer Cape tends to rust hardware sooner than inland. Coated springs, galvanized track and stainless fasteners hold up better. Wind-driven sand wears seals and can jam the lower rollers, so sweep the tracks when you arrive. A stiffer insulated door resists wind.
Older cottages often have a one-car garage or a shed with swing doors. Steel or composite doors with a wood look replace rotted wood ones.
The state's home improvement chart says a garage door replacement may need a permit and a new installation does (mass.gov). We check with the Truro building office.
We install Clopay, Garaga, Wayne Dalton and Amarr doors and service LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie and other openers.
