Hampden County

Russell is a small Hampden County town. Detached houses are 75% of units, two- to four-unit buildings 16% and buildings of five or more 6% (ACS B25024). Eighty-five percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied. Thirty-four percent of units were built before 1940, 37% from 1940 to 1979 and 9% in 2000 or later; the median year is 1963 (ACS B25034). About 1% of units are seasonal (ACS B25004).
The state inventory lists the Russell Center Historic District (1996) on the National Register (MHC inventory). It shows no local historic district, so the listing doesn't by itself mean a review for a garage door.
More than a fifth of units are in buildings with two or more homes. Garages at these properties are often a row of single bays or one shared double door. Heavy use wears the springs: a standard torsion spring is rated for roughly ten thousand cycles, and a shared door can reach that years sooner than a single-family's. Higher-cycle springs are made for that kind of load.
A third of the housing is from before 1940. Garages on older lots are often tight. If the opening is short, low-headroom track can make room for a sectional door. If the frame is rotted at the bottom, we replace the jamb sections before hanging a door.
Houses from 1940 to 1979 often have an attached one-car garage. Older openers with no photo-eye sensors are a safety risk around children and pets. See garage door openers.
Snowmelt runs toward garages on sloped lots. Keep the threshold clear of ice, and replace a cracked bottom seal so water stays out.
The state's home improvement chart says a garage door replacement may need a permit and a new installation does (mass.gov). We confirm with the town.
We install Clopay, Garaga, Wayne Dalton and Amarr doors and service LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie and other openers.
