Millville is a small town of about 1,200 housing units. Thirty percent of them were built before 1940, 27% from 1940 to 1979 and 18% in 2000 or later, with a median year of 1974 (ACS B25034). Detached houses are 69% of units, attached single-family units 13% and two- to four-unit buildings 16% (ACS B25024). Eighty-seven percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied, and about 1% of units are seasonal (ACS B25004).
The state inventory lists three National Register entries in Millville: the Blackstone Canal Historic District (1995), the Central Street Historic District (2003) and the Main Street Historic District (2006) (MHC inventory). It shows no local historic district. Being on the Register by itself doesn't require town approval for a new garage door.
The older homes in town often have detached garages or converted outbuildings. Openings may be narrower or shorter than today's standard doors. We measure the opening, the headroom above it and the room on each side, then size the door and track to fit. A carriage house door suits many older houses.
About one unit in eight is attached, and nearly a fifth of the housing is from 2000 or later. Those garages usually have steel doors and torsion springs. When the door is slow, noisy or uneven, the fix is often new rollers and a spring adjustment. See garage door rollers.
The state's home improvement chart lists a garage door replacement as something that may need a building permit, and a new installation as something that does (mass.gov). We check with the town before starting.
An opener should reverse when it meets an obstruction. If yours doesn't, or it has no photo-eye sensors, it's time to replace it. A wall-mount opener works where the ceiling is low.
We install Clopay, Garaga, Wayne Dalton and Amarr doors and service LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie and other openers.
