County
Middlesex County runs from dense inner cities to rural towns on the New Hampshire line, and its garage doors vary as much. Its 54 municipalities show a median year built of 1962 in the American Community Survey (2020-2024): 32% of units predate 1940, 36% are from 1940 to 1979 and 15% were built since 2000 (ACS B25034). Detached houses are 46% of units, two- to four-unit buildings 21% and larger buildings 25%; 61% of homes are owner-occupied (ACS B25024).
The Massachusetts Historical Commission inventory lists 141 local historic district areas in Middlesex across 34 municipalities, more than any other county, plus 279 National Register district areas. Examples run from the Acton Centre and West and South Acton villages (1991) to the Bedford Historic District (1964) and Mount Gilboa-Crescent Hill in Arlington (1991) (MHC inventory). In any of those districts, MGL c.40C makes a street-visible door an exterior architectural feature that needs a commission certificate before it changes (c.40C §5 and §6). With that many districts, checking whether your address is inside one is the first step before ordering a new door.
Only Everett, on the Mystic, is on the CZM coastal list (CZM); salt is a minor factor in most of the county.
The inner cities have shared, high-cycle doors; the outer suburbs have two-car attached garages from the 1960s through 1990s with springs near the end of their rating. Both end in a broken spring. We match the spring to the door's actual weight, not the old label, and check cables, drums and bearings on the same visit.
Plenty of Middlesex garages have a 20- or 30-year-old opener. If it hums without moving or reverses for no reason, it may be the gear, the sensors or an unbalanced door. We service and install every opener brand, including LiftMaster, Chamberlain and Genie.
For a new door, we can source Clopay, Garaga, Wayne Dalton and Amarr. The state home-improvement chart lists door replacement as "maybe" needing a building permit and installation as "yes" (mass.gov); each town's building department decides. Licensed and insured, with proof of insurance, license and 1099 on request.
A door stuck open, off its tracks or with a snapped cable: stop using it and call (781) 602-0737. Details are on our emergency service page.
