Berkshire County

Windsor is a Berkshire hill town of detached, owner-occupied houses. Ninety-four percent of units are single-family detached and 5% are in two- to four-unit buildings (ACS B25024); 96% of occupied homes are owner-occupied. Nineteen percent of units were built before 1940, 44% from 1940 to 1979 and 11% in 2000 or later; the median year is 1970 (ACS B25034). About 22% of units are seasonal (ACS B25004).
About one home in five is seasonal. Garages at these properties face long idle periods and cold. Before closing up:
On return, look for nests in the track and chewed weatherstripping before using the door.
Four in ten homes are from these decades. Many have attached one-car garages or detached two-car garages. The original wood doors are mostly gone; their replacements often hang on old hardware. A loud, jerky door usually needs new rollers and hinges more than a new door. See garage door rollers.
Hill towns get heavy snow. Snow sliding off a roof can pile against the bottom of the door; clear it before opening. If the door is frozen to the slab, free it by hand. Running the opener against ice can strip its gear.
Long rural roads mean power outages in storms. A battery-backup opener keeps working, and the emergency release lets you lift the door by hand.
The state's home improvement chart says a garage door replacement may need a permit and a new installation does (mass.gov). We confirm with the town.
Chewed seals let mice in. Replace them each fall.
We install Clopay, Garaga, Wayne Dalton and Amarr doors and service LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie and other openers.
