Wenham is a small town of mostly detached houses. Detached homes are 78% of units and buildings of five or more 10% (ACS B25024); 86% of occupied homes are owner-occupied. Fifty-six percent of units were built from 1940 to 1979, 17% before 1940 and 13% in 2000 or later, with a median year of 1961 (ACS B25034).
The state inventory lists the Wenham Historic District (1973) as a local historic district, and the same district is on the National Register (MHC inventory). Under chapter 40C, the district commission reviews exterior changes that can be seen from a public way (MGL c.40C §5 and §6). If your house is in the district, talk to the commission before you change the style, material or color of a garage door that faces the street.
The Wenham Building Department lets residents "apply, pay for, and receive building, electrical, gas, plumbing, and mechanical permits online" after a one-time registration (Wenham Building Department). The state's home improvement chart says a replacement garage door may need a permit and a new installation does (mass.gov). If your job needs one, we file it online.
Capes, ranches and colonials from the 1950s and 1960s often have one- or two-car garages with doors that are 50 years old or more. Thin steel panels dent, and wood panels crack and swell. An insulated steel door with a wood-grain finish fits the period look. See steel garage doors.
Some older properties have barns or carriage houses. Their doors may be hinged or sliding, and the openings are seldom standard. We measure and fit a carriage house door that opens overhead but keeps the look.
Older doors on extension springs should have safety cables. If a spring snaps without one, it can whip across the garage. See extension spring repair.
A smart opener can alert you when the door is left open and close it from your phone.
We install Clopay, Garaga, Wayne Dalton and Amarr doors and service LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie and other openers.
