Much of Whitman's housing is old. Thirty-eight percent of units predate 1940 and the median year built is 1957 (ACS B25034). Detached homes are 58% of units, attached one-unit homes 11% and two- to four-unit buildings 18% (ACS B25024). Seventy-one percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied.
Whitman's online permitting page draws a clear line: "Homeowners are able to submit Building Permits & Electrical Permits only". Plumbing and gas permits must be filed by a licensed plumber or gasfitter. The page also says "No permit is considered for review until payment has been made." For garage doors, the state's home-improvement chart lists replacement as a "maybe" for a building permit and new door installation as a "yes" (mass.gov). We'll tell you which applies to your job.
Prewar Whitman houses and two-families often sit on narrow lots with a single-bay detached garage. Those garages commonly have sagging headers, rotted jambs and doors that drag. Before hanging a new door, we check that the opening is square and the framing can carry it. Lightweight steel doors with low-headroom track suit these buildings. Where the old door still works, new rollers and a tune-up may be enough. For attached townhouses, matching the neighbors' door matters, so we confirm the model and color first.
The Massachusetts Historical Commission inventory lists no local historic district in Whitman.
Many older Whitman doors still run on extension springs mounted above the horizontal tracks. When one of those springs breaks without a safety cable inside it, it can fly across the garage. If your door has extension springs and no cables running through them, ask us to add safety cables or convert the door to a torsion system at the next visit.
MassGarage is family owned. We install Clopay, Garaga, Wayne Dalton and Amarr doors and repair LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie and other openers.
