Medway is mostly detached houses: 81% of units are single-family detached and 86% of occupied homes are owner-occupied (ACS B25024). The median year built is 1976; 19% of units predate 1940 and 10% date from 2000 or later (ACS B25034).
Medway's Building Department page says building, gas, plumbing, wiring and sheet metal permits are applied for online. It also explains that the Building Commissioner is the town's Zoning Enforcement Agent, and that setbacks for each zone appear on the zoning map. That helps if your garage project is more than a door swap, such as a new detached garage or a wider bay. For the door itself, the state's home-improvement chart lists replacement as a "maybe" for a building permit and new door installation as a "yes" (mass.gov).
Medway's 1970s and 1980s houses usually have attached two-car garages, and the original sectional doors are thin, uninsulated and often dented along the bottom. Replacing just the bottom panel is possible when the model is still available. Otherwise an insulated steel door is the usual choice. In the older village areas, detached garages behind 19th-century houses tend to suit a carriage-house door on low-headroom track.
The MHC inventory lists the Rabbit Hill Historic District (1988), the Medway Village Historic District (2008) and Evergreen Cemetery (2021) on the National Register. It shows no local historic district in Medway.
If you're planning a new detached garage rather than a new door, Medway's note that setbacks are on the zoning map is the place to start. A garage placed too close to the lot line can stall a project. Once the location is settled, we can help pick a door size and style that suits both the building and the house beside it.
