Worcester County has 60 cities and towns, including Fitchburg, Leominster, Webster and Southbridge. None of them is on the CZM coastal list (CZM), so salt spray is not the issue here; road salt and cold are.
In the American Community Survey (2020-2024), the county's median year built is 1967. A little over a quarter of units (27%) predate 1940, 36% are from 1940 to 1979 and 15% from 2000 on (ACS B25034). Detached houses make up 57% of units and two- to four-unit buildings 20%, with 66% of homes owner-occupied (ACS B25024).
The Massachusetts Historical Commission inventory lists 28 local historic district areas in 16 Worcester County municipalities and 203 National Register district areas. They range from town commons, like Grafton Common (1981) and Mendon Center (2017), to Harvard Shaker Village (1974), Monument Park in Fitchburg (1975) and the Boylston Historic District (1979) (MHC inventory). In a local district, MGL c.40C requires a certificate before a garage door visible from a public way is changed (c.40C §5 and §6).
In winter, a door frozen to the slab has to break free of the ice before it lifts, which loads the springs and the opener at the worst moment. We replace broken springs as a matched pair where the door has two, and we check the bottom seal, since a frozen or torn seal makes the opener and springs work harder. Weatherstripping is a cheap fix that helps.

For heated or attached garages, an insulated door cuts drafts. The state home-improvement chart lists door replacement as "maybe" needing a building permit and installation as "yes" (mass.gov).
