Gloucester's housing is old. Forty-seven percent of units were built before 1940 and the median unit dates to 1946; 29% are from 1940 to 1979 and 11% from 2000 or later (ACS B25034). Detached houses are 49% of units and two- to four-unit buildings 33% (ACS B25024). Sixty-four percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied, and 7% of units are seasonal (ACS B25004).
The MHC inventory lists the Central Gloucester Historic District and the Front Street Block as local designations from 1977. Massachusetts law gives a district commission review of street-visible exterior features, which covers doors (MGL c.40C §5 and §6). Ask the historic commission before changing a visible garage door in the district. Rocky Neck, East Gloucester Square and the Annisquam Harbor and Eastern Point light stations are on the National Register (MHC inventory).
A third of Gloucester units are in two- to four-family buildings. Their garages are often detached with narrow doors, short headers and extension springs. We replace springs, add safety cables and fit low-headroom track.
Gloucester is on the coastal-communities list (Massachusetts CZM). For homes near the harbor or shore, galvanized springs and cables, stainless fasteners and nylon rollers all last longer here. A yearly tune-up catches rust before it breaks a cable, and a battery-backup opener helps in outages.
The Building Inspector's office takes all permit types through its Online Permitting Center. Inspectors are in the office Monday to Friday 8:30 to 9:30 am and Monday to Thursday 1:00 to 2:00 pm, and "All inspections are by appointments," which need the permit number and address (Gloucester Building Inspector). State guidance says replacing a door may need a permit (mass.gov).
We install Clopay, Garaga, Wayne Dalton and Amarr doors and service LiftMaster, Chamberlain and Genie openers.
