North Reading is mainly postwar housing. Forty-six percent of units were built from 1940 to 1979; 10% predate 1940 and 17% are from 2000 or later, with a median build year of 1975 (ACS B25034). Detached houses are 74% of units, attached units 6% and buildings of five or more 18% (ACS B25024). Eighty-four percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied.
The MHC inventory lists the Center Village Historic District, designated in 1994. Under MGL c.40C §5 and §6, the district commission may review doors and other exterior features visible from a public way. If your home is in the district, check with the historic commission before replacing a garage door that faces the street.
Much of North Reading was built out in the 1950s through the 1970s. Typical homes have a one-car garage under the house or a two-car attached garage. Original wood doors are heavy and drafty; an insulated steel door is the common replacement, and it helps keep a garage under a bedroom warmer.
Nearly a fifth of units are in larger buildings. In condo communities, the association often sets the door model and handles exterior repairs; the owner usually maintains the opener. Ask before booking.
North Reading moved to online permitting through PermitEyes in September 2019, and permits issued since then can be looked up by address on the PermitEyes public view (North Reading Building Department). That's useful if you're buying a house and want to see past permitted work. Per state guidance, a replacement door may need a permit and a new installation does (mass.gov).
If you hear a bang and the door won't open, a torsion spring has likely broken. Don't force it with the opener. See broken spring repair.
We install Clopay, Garaga, Wayne Dalton and Amarr doors and service LiftMaster, Chamberlain and Genie openers.
