Williamstown has a mix of old and postwar houses with some apartment buildings. Thirty-three percent of units were built before 1940, 43% from 1940 to 1979 and 9% in 2000 or later; the median year is 1959 (ACS B25034). Detached houses are 71% of units, two- to four-unit buildings 12% and buildings of five or more 11% (ACS B25024). Seventy-four percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied, and about 7% of units are seasonal (ACS B25004).
The state inventory lists the Mill Village (1983), Five Corners (1993), Williamstown Rail Yard and Station (1994) and Mount Greylock Summit (1998) historic districts on the National Register (MHC inventory). It shows no local historic district, so Register listing alone doesn't require approval to change a garage door.
The largest share of homes is from 1940 to 1979: capes, ranches and colonials with one- or two-car garages. Many have had their doors replaced once, but the track, springs and opener may be original. Mismatched parts wear unevenly. We check the whole system and replace what's worn. See garage door parts.
Pre-1940 homes often have a separate garage at the end of the driveway. If it has a swing or slide door that's hard to use in snow, an overhead sectional door can replace it if the header height allows.
Snow and ice build up at the bottom of the door, and cold makes rubber stiff. A flexible vinyl seal stays soft longer. Keep the slab clear so the door can close fully.
If you're away part of the year, have the springs and auto-reverse checked before you leave.
The state's home improvement chart says a garage door replacement may need a permit and a new installation does (mass.gov). We confirm with the town.
We install Clopay, Garaga, Wayne Dalton and Amarr doors and service LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie and other openers.
