Groton is mostly detached houses: 80% of units are single-family detached (ACS B25024), and 89% of occupied homes are owner-occupied. The median unit dates to 1988. Seventeen percent of units predate 1940, 19% are from 1940 to 1979 and 19% from 2000 or later (ACS B25034); the rest are from the 1980s and 1990s.
The state inventory lists Groton Historic Districts #1 and #3 (1964), the Groton Inn (1964) and Groton Historic District #2 (1965) as local historic districts (MHC inventory). In a chapter 40C district, the commission must approve exterior changes visible from a public way (MGL c.40C §5 and §6). If your house is inside one of these districts, ask the commission before replacing a garage door that can be seen from the street. Repairs that don't change the look, such as new springs or rollers, are inside the garage.
A large share of the town's housing went up in the last decades of the century. Those garages typically have two-car doors with torsion springs that are now at or past the end of their life. If one spring breaks, we usually replace both so the door stays balanced. See torsion spring repair.
Older properties often have barns or detached garages with wide or uneven openings. A custom-sized door or a carriage house door fits better than a stock size.
On a long driveway, a smart opener tells you if you left the door open. Battery backup keeps it working when the power goes out after a storm.
The state home improvement chart lists a garage door replacement as a possible permit item and a new installation as a yes (mass.gov). We confirm with Groton.
We install Clopay, Garaga, Wayne Dalton and Amarr doors and service LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie and other openers.
