Ludlow's housing is mostly midcentury and detached. Forty-eight percent of units were built from 1940 to 1979, 19% before 1940 and 12% in 2000 or later, and the median unit dates to 1964 (ACS B25034). Detached houses are 74% of units and two- to four-unit buildings 14% (ACS B25024). Seventy-eight percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied.
The state inventory lists the Ludlow Center Historic District (1988) and the Ludlow Village Historic District (1993) on the National Register (MHC inventory). It shows no local historic district. Register listing alone doesn't require approval to change a garage door.
Most of the housing is from the postwar decades. Typical garages are one- or two-car, attached or tuck-under. Many still have original extension springs, and some have openers without photo-eye sensors. We replace both springs together and add safety cables. See extension spring repair.
A garage under living space needs a quiet opener and a well-sealed door. A belt-drive opener and an insulated door help. See belt drive openers.
Older homes near the mill villages can have small detached garages with low headers. Low-headroom track lets an overhead door fit where standard track won't.
About one unit in seven is in a two- to four-unit building. For a shared garage, a keypad with separate codes is easier than passing remotes around.
The state's home improvement chart lists a garage door replacement as a possible permit item and a new installation as a yes (mass.gov). We confirm with Ludlow.
If the opener hums but the door doesn't lift, a spring has probably broken. Leave it closed and call.
For a postwar ranch, a short raised-panel or flush steel door in a single color usually suits the house. If the garage is used as a workshop, an insulated door keeps it warmer. Windows in the top section add light. We bring samples so you can see the colors against the siding.
We install Clopay, Garaga, Wayne Dalton and Amarr doors and service LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie and other openers.
