Shelburne has old housing and a large share of small multi-family buildings. Half of all units were built before 1940, 22% from 1940 to 1979 and 5% in 2000 or later; the median year is 1938 (ACS B25034). Detached houses are 53% of units, two- to four-unit buildings 29% and buildings of five or more 13% (ACS B25024). Sixty-eight percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied, and about 4% of units are seasonal (ACS B25004).
The state inventory lists the Shelburne Falls Historic District (1988) and the Hill Cemetery and Parson Hubbard House (2006) for Shelburne on the National Register (MHC inventory). No local historic district is listed.
The Building Inspector page says Shelburne is a member of the Franklin County Cooperative Inspection Program, administered by the Franklin Regional Council of Governments from an office in Greenfield (Shelburne Building Inspector). The state's home improvement chart says a garage door replacement may need a permit and a new installation does (mass.gov). If a permit is needed, we apply through the program.
With four in ten units in buildings of two or more, many garages are shared or rented out. Doors on a shared garage open many more times a day. Rollers wear flat and hinges crack. We replace worn parts with high-cycle hardware where it helps. Landlords can give each tenant a keypad code and change it at turnover.
Garages on old village lots are often small detached buildings. Some still have wood doors with extension springs. Add safety cables, or convert to a torsion spring. See extension spring repair.
Slush and road salt rot the bottom of wood doors and rust steel ones. Rinse the bottom section in spring and replace a cracked seal before the next winter.
We install Clopay, Garaga, Wayne Dalton and Amarr doors and service LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie and other openers.
