Leverett is a town of detached, owner-occupied houses. Detached houses are 89% of units and two- to four-unit buildings 7% (ACS B25024); 87% of occupied homes are owner-occupied. Twenty-four percent of units were built before 1940, 36% from 1940 to 1979 and 11% in 2000 or later; the median year is 1973 (ACS B25034). About 4% of units are seasonal (ACS B25004).
The state inventory lists the Leverett Center Historic District (2008) and the East Leverett, Moore's Corner and North Leverett historic districts (2014) on the National Register (MHC inventory). It shows no local historic district, so a Register listing alone doesn't require approval for a new garage door.
Older houses in the villages often have a detached garage or a barn close to the road. Their doors are often hinged or sliding, and the openings may be out of square. A wood-look sectional door can replace them if the header is tall enough. We check the framing first.
The median house is from 1973. Many from that decade have a garage under the house or an attached one-car garage. A belt-drive or wall-mount opener is quieter under a bedroom.
Leaves and pine needles collect in tracks and at the threshold. Sweep them out in fall so the door closes fully. Storms can cut power, so a battery-backup opener is worth considering.
Ice at the bottom of the door can freeze it to the slab. Free it before you press the button.
If the door suddenly feels very heavy, a spring has broken. Leave it closed and call.
The state's home improvement chart says a garage door replacement may need a permit and a new installation does (mass.gov). We confirm with the town.
We install Clopay, Garaga, Wayne Dalton and Amarr doors and service LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie and other openers.
