Westminster is a town of detached houses: 89% of units are single-family detached (ACS B25024), and 88% of occupied homes are owner-occupied. The median unit dates to 1977. Twenty percent of units predate 1940, 35% are from 1940 to 1979 and 20% from 2000 or later (ACS B25034).
The Westminster Village - Academy Hill Historic District is on the National Register (1983) (MHC inventory). The state inventory lists no local historic district, so Register listing alone doesn't require approval for a garage door.
The Building & Zoning Department takes plumbing, gas and electrical permits online through its ViewPoint portal. Its hours are Monday 7 am to 7 pm and Tuesday to Thursday 7:30 am to 4:30 pm, closed Friday (Westminster Building & Zoning Department). The state's home improvement chart says a replacement garage door may need a building permit and a new installation does (mass.gov).
A fifth of the housing predates 1940. Barns and sheds on these lots often have wide, low or out-of-square openings. We size the door to the opening and frame where needed. See carriage house doors.
A fifth of units are from 2000 or later, usually with two-car garages, insulated doors and torsion springs. When one spring breaks, we replace both so the door stays balanced. See broken spring repair.
A new opener usually plugs into an existing ceiling outlet. If there's no outlet, you may need an electrician to add one.
Clear snow and ice from the bottom of the door before opening it, and keep the photo-eye lenses clean.
A detached garage that isn't heated can use a non-insulated steel door. If you work in it during the winter, an insulated door with a good bottom seal holds heat better. Windows in the top section let in daylight. We bring samples so you can compare styles and colors at the house.
We install Clopay, Garaga, Wayne Dalton and Amarr doors and service LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie and other openers.
